Street Art Without Borders

Way back in November Marilyn from Kamoon called me up to see if i would like to hang out with her street art loving friend from France, I of course said yes.

We met up outside my fave pho restaurant. I arrived early and began stickering the door  when a man in his 50′s, 6 foot 5″ with grey hair walk towards me with my friend Marilyn. As I shook his hand, he noticed the newly placed sticker and said “cool” as he proceeded to add a sticker of his own!

I found out shortly after that his name was Eric and that he started a project called Street Art Without Borders. The project is focused at providing street art and art in general to the masses. He doesn’t create the art himself but acts more as a curator as he goes around various cities choosing ideal sites for the artwork to be displayed. He told me that he carried over 200 pieces with him on arrival in China and plans to display them all during his time in China. The artwork ranges from A4 sized pieces to artwork over 2 meters high!

The project is amazing as he posted work from over 400 artists who send him artwork to display in the cities he visits.Cities and countries he has visited include; Paris, Sau Paulo, Shanghai, Beijing, Russia, Finland, Japan, Korea and more!!!

I was lucky enough to spend an afternoon with him in Shanghai wheat-pasting some artworks around the old town on the Bund. He explained that these are the perfect locations for the art as the locals rarely step into art galleries but that they shouldn’t be deprived of art.

36 Days of Siuper in Hong Kong

Just arrived back from our trip in Hong Kong. It was mayhem as we had parents and grandparents to visit, two weddings to attend and numerous friends and family who wanted to meet Siuper Jr.
However, I still made time to show Siuper around town!

36 days of Siuper

Lions of Puxi: Isobel – Music Video

On the day before I left for Hong Kong, I was invited by an amazing video and photography extraordinaire Nicky Almasy to take part in the filming of a music video for local reggae band Lions of Puxi. The song is called Isobel and the street art portions feature yours truly in disguise as the lead singer Gautier, tagging the streets of Shanghai!

Enjoy!

Here are a few links to the video depending on where you are in the world

The Peoples Portrait Gallery – Take One

Over the past few weeks I have been developing an idea to produce an outdoor gallery for everyone to see. The idea originally came about whilst I was painting the Chair Art Graffiti piece. A Chinese worker rode past on his bike and stopped to see what I was doing. He started questioning me about the wall art of squatters he had seen in the area, I asked him if he liked them, his reply was simply “I love them!” He explained that he had never seen any art work quite like it and wasn’t sure why it was there but that he loved the image and would ride past it each day and it would make them smile (he also liked the Chair Art piece I was working on :-) )

This got me thinking (dangerous I know!) the every day worker in Shanghai never gets the opportunity to go to gallery’s or to go see any sort of art work, so instead of bringing them to a gallery I decided to bring the gallery to the people of Shanghai! This will be the start of a new project which I hope to speak to other districts about to make art available to everyone in Shanghai. The work will consist of famous renditions of paintings along with my portraits of local Chinese communities and the people who inhabit them.

My first attempt was met with a modicum of success as the owners of the wall haven’t given their permission… However everyone who has seen the pictures love them, from security guard, shop owners to workers passing by everyone has been very positive about the work and I hope to continue the work on another wall close by.

Here are the images from my first attempt:

Siu Tang Tag

Here is a quick tag I did today in about an hour! I was impressed with the speed as I had to get it done as part of another project.

Color goes well with the Nat tag I did earlier this week.

Enjoy!

Nat @ Moganshan

Here is a sneak peek at a multimedia project I am working on. The Graffiti side of the project is done. I will update my site once the second half of the project is complete!

For now Enjoy!

From my initial sketch at 5:30am this morning (couldn’t sleep) I scanned and uploaded the image into illustrator and then started to play with the colors in Photoshop.

Smoke’em if you got’em

I came across this old lumber yard in Shanghai and they had these old phone poles lying around back. Instant art!

SJ and the Bear Birthday Greeting

First off HAPPY BIRTHDAY SHIU JENE!!!

This piece of art was weirdly inspired by my recent bear drawings and a weird compulsion to draw a bear for SJ’s birthday. So began my painting today in 40 degree shanghai sun! I later found out that there was in fact a show called BJ and the Bear Here BJ was a trucker and the “bear” was played by a chimp, yes a CHIMP! anyways…

Have a great Birthday SJ and hope you like the Bearthday greeting (get it?!?)

Angry Bear

The title says it all!

This is from a new game/ story book concept I am working on based on Goldilocks and the Three Bears. I wanted to paint his image BIG to see what it would look like. I didn’t add the claws as… well… I am to short and couldn’t reach the top of the wall!

The original art drawing and the concept art for the 3 Bears is attached

Hope you enjoy!

Great Grandaddy of a Squatter

This is dedicated to my great granddad, I never had the chance to meet him but was told by all who knew him that he was a kind and caring man.I carry around a picture of him, I liberated from my Grans photo album. I have always wanted to do something with his image and couldn’t quite think what would be right. With my squatters rights stencils I thought why not use his image, however he is my great-grandfather and with that title and honor I decided to supersize him!

This took around 2 hours to do (not including time sketching and enlarging his image and then cutting him out, that took HOURS!!)

I was lucky enough to bump into a fellow street artist who was kind enough to take pictures of me whilst working. (she thought I was painting a picture of Barak Obama!

Enjoy!
